Online Backups
"It is not a question of if your hard drive will fail, but it's a question
of when it will fail. All you can do is to be ready when it does fail by having a copy of all of the files on your hard drive saved away from your computer."

Never Check your Voicemail Again

I cannot stand voicemail.  It seems I never have time to check it until the end of the day, and by then, my mail box is overflowing.  Usually one third of the messages are very important and should have been acted on hours ago and the remaining two thirds are junk.  I have always wanted to be able to have my voicemail transcribed into email messages.  That way my assistant could alert me about the important ones, and take care of a lot of client requests herself.  I finally found the perfect solution with the program PhoneTag.

PhoneTag replaces your cell phones voice mail, transcribes the messages, and then emails them to you.  If there was a problem with the transcription, you can play the wave file attached to your email and listen to it.  You have unlimited voicemail storage and can print out a report of all your voice messages.  There is no training involved.

People always ask me, how accurate is it?  Well a couple of months ago I was driving home from False River and one of my friends was in the car behind me.  She decided to sing the words to Billy Joel's We Didn't Start the Fire into my voicemail.  The email I received is below.  Pretty impressive stuff!

Microsoft is Coming to Town
Using Microsoft Applications in the Law Office

Leveraging our Partner Status with Microsoft Law Office Technology was able to get the Microsoft Across America Truck to come down to New Orleans Aug 1st.  With this great opportunity, we have teamed up with Digital Legal Solutions of New Orleans, the Gulf Coast Legal Technology Center and the Louisiana State Bar Association to do several presentations of how Law Firms can leverage Microsoft Technology.

This program will discuss how to use Microsoft applications to effectively practice law with a special focus on the technology of internet access and collaboration tools. Three separate sessions will demonstrate what essential technology needs you can solve with Microsoft applications, how to customize your own practice management system with Microsoft Office and Business Contact Manager as well as using SharePoint in a hosted environment to make your office completely mobile.

In addition, a Microsoft Across America Truck will be at the event. A 42 foot truck filled with the latest technology for Small and Mid-size businesses, the MAA truck offers an opportunity to meet with local and Microsoft experts to discuss practical, integrated software and hardware solutions in a hands-on, interactive environment. Specific solutions available for demonstration will include Microsoft Office Small Business Edition, Microsoft Windows XP, Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2003 and Microsoft Dynamics CRM as well as the latest from Cisco, HP, Intel and more.

The Microsoft truck will be available from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM and you MUST be registered for the event to enter the truck. Cost for the event is $25.00 per person and lunch will be provided.  Application is pending but not yet approved for 3 CLE credits with Mandatory Continuing Legal Education.

Worldox Tip

If you install Worldox on Vista, you will notice that your staff will have to type in their usernames when Worldox starts, even if you have setup the aliases.  This is pretty easy to fix.  Fire up worldox admin and go to Users --> User Options --> Startup.  Change the Logon Name from USER to USERNAME  This will solve the problem.

PCLaw Tip

When you are setting up ADP's PCLaw Payroll, you will need to make sure the ADP module can see all of the GL Accounts.  If you do not have the General Ledger Accounts setup in your PCLaw, you will need to add them.  Once you have created the GL Accounts, you will need to check Payroll Account for the GL Accounts.
